Picture of the Year voting round 1 open

[edit]

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

  1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
  2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
  3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

I need help

[edit]

Hello. I'm editor from the spanish wikipedia, and I came here because I saw you had previous experience with this User[1]

My problem is than another picture from Archita78 has been placed over and over on the page from the Jack Russell Terrier in wiki spanish: [2] Over several months I have undone the ip´s editions, but always came another ip and insists on putting again that picture. And... the picture is very poor quality, not only because the atmosphere is overloaded in reddish details or blurry, but because misrepresent the breed Jack Russell (the dog does not have prick ears according to the standard). I see no sense to continue undoing the ip´s edits, because I saw it could follow an edit wars and Sock puppetry, until the page must be protected as occurred in the English Wikipedia on the Jack Russell Terrier page:12345

So... I will like to know if possible to delete the photo? Fortunately, Commons has lovely photos about the Jack Russell, so it does not hurt to remove a poor quality file where the dog itself can not even be seen properly and it´s poorly representative from the breed.

Thanks for your time :) --Frei sein (talk) 11:46, 16 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Rétablissement de photos

[edit]

Hello again!

[edit]

Sorry to disturb, but it's the first time I upload a image from a web site that allows free use. The problem is I do not know what kind of license I should place in, because the website ask to be attributed and authorship plus a link to their website. So I did it and placed a license, but I do not know if I did it ok. Could you please see if I did it right? Because the same page has some interesting photos free than i did like to upload here, but first I would like to know well the procedure to avoid any extra work. Thanks for your help! —Frei sein (Talk to me!) 20:02, 19 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

dear Pyb, I wanted to give you a barnstar for "Hello, I saw your message on the Village pump. I'll help you": it is the best ever message I read on a talk page. Great formulation and great meaning. The problem of barnstars is that I never know which one to pick, if it's the right one (well, I do like only The Original Barnstar) and if people will actually appreciate it or it's not appropriate. So, please just accept my thank you!

Please let me know if you have examples of other way of working or suggestions. best, --iopensa (talk) 11:53, 26 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

If i understand correctly the template object works better for
  • linguistic support
  • it is already more used (probably better also for the future of Wikidata)
  • we can include it in categories and articles?
  • the transfer of the information from the templates artwork to this template should not be too complicated
  • the only problem is see is that we have to put the data in all photos and we can not simply update an artwork description which changes automatically in all pages. this is a pretty big problem considering the number of images and the limited number of artworks (the artwork description also includes references and the artwork history, which is quite cool and appropriate).

do i get it correctly? I am good with it but it would be great if we can have one page for each artwork to update rather than different info for each image. what do you think? thanks, --iopensa (talk) 12:45, 26 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Guy Huygens article at en and fr

[edit]

Salut, Pyb. At en:Guy Huygens we have just uncovered a case of persistent sockpuppetry and copyright infringements. A bunch of user with names including variants of "Frank" have edited the article and introduced text that was merely paraphrasing of this website. It has now been pointed out to me that the French Wikipedia article, fr:Guy Huygens appears to suffer from the same sort of problems. There are numerous "Franks" in the edit history, and the article itself looks quite similar to this. So, when I saw you were active over here I thought I'd leave you a note about it. Thanks to the participation of people like you, the contest gathered more than 365,000 pictures of cultural heritage objects from more than 50 countries around the world, becoming the largest photography competition to have ever taken place.

You can find all your pictures in your upload log, and are of course very welcome to keep uploading images and help develop Wikimedia Commons, even though you will not be able to win more prizes (just yet).

If you'd like to start editing relevant Wikipedia articles and share your knowledge with other people, please go to the Wikipedia Welcome page for more information, guidance, and help.

To make future contests even more successful than this year, we would like to invite you to share your experiences with us in a short survey. Please fill in this short survey in your own language, and help us learn what you liked and didn't like about Wiki Loves Monuments 2013.

Kind regards,

the Wiki Loves Monuments team

Thanks for uploading File:Marty - Les principaux monuments funéraires - Tulla.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

No required license templates were detected at this file page. Please correct it, or if you have any questions please contact me on my talk page. Yours sincerely, Jarekt (talk) 05:32, 1 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Volley

[edit]

Bonjour,
