SLicons

Hello and excuse me. These files are not SLicons and are not planned to be in this category. Just now I am trying to request converting SLicons to svg and need the category to be free of files that don't belong. Could you explain why you undid my edit? Vcohen (talk) 12:38, 30 July 2017 (UTC)

  • @Vcohen: Those new SVGs are replacements for the equivalent PNGs, which are this category. I suppose they may not be funcional ones, not being passible of transclusion by template due to the filenames, but that’s an internal SLicon matter. I suggest that new subcats under Category:SLicons be created, one of SVGs and another for PNGs, while it is necessary. -- Tuválkin ✉ ✇ 23:54, 30 July 2017 (UTC)
  • They are not replacements, because they don't correspond them by their shapes and names, and even by their number. The original SLicons were created by me (SL stands for Station Layout) and are used in a series of templates on the Russian Wikipedia (I tried to create similar templates on the English Wikipedia too, but they eventually were not used). SLicons is the subcat that you mentioned, and its parent category Category:Icons for station layouts is intended for all files that are not SLicons. Vcohen (talk) 09:41, 31 July 2017 (UTC)

XXX / Barrels in art

Are you sure of this? It seems to me to apply to only about half of the photos in the category. - Jmabel ! talk 02:17, 18 August 2017 (UTC)

  • Well, I guess we could create subcats for "Logo of Triple X Root Beer" and for "Roof of Triple X Root Beer restaurant", both with parent cat "Barrels in art", and then dissiminate the few photos we have, but that’s maybe overkill for now? Most of the times

Hi Tuvalkin. I can understand this. But 'most of the times' in my view does not justify categorizing every photograph that shows the fingers of the photographers as a mistake. It can even have an artistic or otherwise deliberate motive to include them, as we can see in that category. Is this a mistake? Of course not. Then we shouldn't suggest it is by classifying it as such. Perhaps the deliberate and undeliberate situations could be split into separate categories.
Further, you might also consider whether the category "Self-portrait photographs" is in place there. Regards, Apdency (talk) 17:58, 16 November 2017 (UTC)

  • Thank you for creating the new category. I think the name is well chosen too. I took a closer look at the Google Books fingers and, yes, it seems likely they weren't supposed to be there, while the image is derived from a book scan. So, everything OK. Problem with a user

Dear Tuválkin, Fæ, Túrelio, Guanaco, and Jeff, I'm contacting you today because you helped me greatly last september, when I had a problem with an admin, and I feel the communication is fine with you. Since this bad experience (I was nearly blocked for a totally unfair reason), I've lived in peace until recently and became an active member in the QI and FP sections. Many of my photos have been promoted, and I enjoy talking with most of the other members there. Unfortunately I have a trouble now with the user Colin. See this page Commons:Featured picture candidates/File:Evolution of a Tornado.jpg. That person will end up with exceeding me soon if he continues to twist my words and make me look like a trash. I try to stay mellow, but it's difficult, and too much is too much. I've never insulted anyone, but Colin alleges such mistake, and of course because he's Scottish he speaks much better English than me, to be able to transform my comments. I’m not an admin (not I want to ever be), I don’t have any interest nor experience in the QI/FP area (frankly seems to be too much drama for what’s worth, and clearly one bit of Commons activity that could be taken elsewhere, like Flickr, with no losses for anyone), and, most importantly, I have no constructive suggestions about dealing with Colin. There were maybe 3 or 4 occasions ever when I managed to interact with him normally; all other times it has been nothing by fruitless, inexplainable conflict.   • Thanks a lot, Tuválkin, for your constructive answer. I also got nice hints from other people, then now I see better what to do (or not to do) with Colin. All of them share the same feeling which you expresses here of a conflictual mentality. Agree also with your impression of "too much drama for what's worth", although it's disturbing to work in an oppressive context, and as a user new in activity here, I also try to find efficient ways to solve such kind of issues, without making too much waves. Apart from that, I totally respect your desinterest for the QI/FP area, and am aware how useful you are elsewhere. Just for me this area is really great, very interesting, and not only constructive for myself but also for Commons. As for example I wouldn't have uploaded so many files about Laos (where I live), now used in Wikipedia, without this emulating and rewarding section. Just my feedback. Deletion nominations of BSicon redirects

Hi, sorry for nominating your redirect for deletion again. I've put it and   (REPAIR) in use at w:en:WP:RDTS so that they don't get picked up when I'm searching for them semi-automatically (Achim55 wrote a Quarry script to find in-use redirects); Commons pages, user pages and talk pages are excluded since a lot of redirects are only in use in unmaintained catalogues and user sandboxes. Blackletter black letters

Hi. I was not under the impression that the category is for letters in black. The problem is that the source I cited in the description (a qualified art historian) describes the lettering as scriere gotică, which is generally the Romanian for "Blackletter". I am agnostic as to whether the style is or isn't (primitive) Blackletter, but I tend toward acknowledging what the source says as a benchmark, unless contradicted by another source. Thoughts?   • @Dahn: Hello, and thanks for contacting. I think that regardless of the original text this is clearly not blackletter; I suggest that this is a kind of uncial. I don’t want to challenge the original description, but it maybe that in Romania "scriere gotică" means usually not (only) "blackletter", just like in popular English usage "crest" means actually "coat of arms", or in Portuguese use a cruz templária is an orbicular cross, not a beauceant. -- Tuválkin ✉ ✇ 17:39, 19 February 2018 (UTC)
You may be right overall, in the sense that Romanian authors will probably include all Germanic uncial scripts under the "Gothic" nomenclature, whereas English ones will place a neat border between the two. I assume this kind of "Gothic" uncial in the image has some arcane name, and we will probably have a category under that name at some point. Um grande obrigado, this has been productive. Estamos a iniciar uma colaboração GLAM com a Direção-Geral do Património Cultural. A DGCP irá doar aos projetos Wikimedia diversas imagens de elevada resolução das coleções dos museus nacionais. No próximo mês iremos dar formação e acompanhamento aos funcionários da DGPC e dos museus nacionais para ampliar e melhorar a qualidade dos artigos dos museus e das peças mais significativas das coleções nacionais.

Trata-se de um projeto de grande dimensão, pelo que gostava de contar com a sua colaboração. Há várias formas de ajudar, entre as quais rever o carregamento de imagens no Commons, categorizando, inserindo nos artigos e propondo as melhores imagens para destaque; prestar ajuda online aos funcionários dos museus, estando disponível para tirar dúvidas de edição e para preparar os melhores artigos para destaque.   • Estava a dar erro ISO 3166-2 (afetando mais de uma centena de imagens, também, em vez de só o template, por cretinice da Wikidata), e eu corrigi para SP, que é o código ISO 3166-2 para o Estado de São Paulo. Parece que o template do museu (ou outra coisa que este transclui) não está bem ajustado aos dados que se esperam, resultando esse «São Paulo São Paulo» que não faz sentido, mas é aí que se deve corrigir, não “martelando” dados inválidos no preenchimento do template do Museu, que espera um código ISO 3166-2-BR válido — duas letras ("SP", neste caso) e não texto livre ("São Paulo (state)"), que de resto não fica internacionalizado. -- Tuválkin ✉ ✇ 12:07, 10 May 2018 (UTC)

  • @Alexis Jazz: The matter here is not that humans err, but that some (most?) admins act in a way that would still be obnoxious if they were faultless. When it turns out they are not, it’s hard to accept the agressive attitude as useful or even legitimate. Other admins may have responded differently. Had it been Jcb or Blackcat, I wouldn't be surprised if The Drover's Wife would not have complained about a thing. Because they would have been indefblocked. I don't see how a discussion on ANU could lead to anything in this case. I'm not sure how to put it into words, but Yann does things the way Yann does things. He did drop the ball on this case, maybe he overlooked something or was having a bad day. Yann overlooked something. Special:DeletedContributions/The Drover's Wife shows all deleted contributions, including edits, not just file uploads. The Drover's Wife had edited the file pages of the files from Thescrubbythug when he nominated them for deletion and those contributions were deleted along with the files.   • This is a case of «other things exist», sorry: That worse admins would behave even worse is no reason to excuse merely bad behaviour. The only mystery here is why most admins are always ready to excuse their own (and their pals’) apalling behaviour and yet are adamant in demanding irreprehensible conduct from anyone else. In the case at hand the victim did absolutely nothing wrong and yet you say she* was very lucky because other admins would have silenced her. That’s horrifying and shows how much the system has gone corrupted. This is not just because there is a huge backlog and the few working admins are overworked. It is a prevalent culture of despotic entitlement that values trampling basic rights in the name of expediency — and it allows little bad things (like scoring two admin actions due to trivial deletions that should never have happened) and huge bad things (such as the whole INC tragicomedy or the stonewalling of Fæ). Lisbon tram 327 at Crich

Hi Tuvalkin.

As you have probably realised from the side-effects on the tram numbering categories, I've been working through all the photos of the National Tramway Museum at the Crich in the UK, trying to make sure there is a consistent categorisation. I've now come across Category:Lisbon tram 327 (standard), which back in 2015 you added to Category:Tramcars of the National Tramway Museum. The trouble is that I can find no other reference to Lisbon 327 being, or ever having been, at the National Tramway Museum. It does indeed seem to have been brought to the UK, because I found this report, dated about the same time you added the category, saying that body is in outdoor storage at Walton on the Naze. But that isn't an NTM location I recognise; most MTM vehicles that are not at Crich are in indoor storage at Clay Cross. Can you remember what caused you to add it to the NTM category?.

  • My source is Mário Vieira (compil.): Lisboa – Listagem de Eléctricos. Lisboa, 2014.02 (an unpublished document circulated among CCFL enthusiasts). Concerning 327 it says:

    Após sair de serviço foi vendido, indo para a Ribeira de Sintra, onde esteve até 02/1998. Posteriormente seguiu para a Grã-Bretanha, estando o equipamento no museu de Crich e a caixa em Walton-on-the-Naze.

    (That’s why I also tagged as Category:Former Lisbon trams in Sintra, for that 1995~1998 period.) So the body («caixa») is in Walton-on-the-Naze and the “equipment” (engines, controllers, cabling, trolley pole, truck?) is in the “Crich museum” («museu de Crich»), which I take it to be the National Tramway Museum.   • @Useddenim: I suppose It’s desirable to have matching and homogenous icons, of course. If the length of the gaps and strokes needs to be adjusted, I’m not at all against that. These icons were originally designed in an amateurish way, meanwhile we come a long way.
(I wanted to inspect the matter in more detail and was going to add PX=64px to the lines of your sample diagram, but alas it’s created using that unparsable inhuman notation: Not touching it. )

Honestly, given his experience in Commons, I was surprised by his defense of such an obvious mistake. With regard to its expeditious reversion in [Category: Travessa do Oleiro], and applying 'precision' when categorizing in Commons, I would like you to consider a couple of observations: 1) By systematic and general rule, the categories of people, categorize people. Only in the very unlikely case - and that it would have to be justified by a reference - that the people who appear in the photo were "oleiros" would have a place, very tangentially, in the category of potters. 2) If it had taken a few minutes to consult my history or my discussion page I would probably have inferred that I am a basic editor on pottery and ceramics issues. Not in vain I have been collaborating for six years in the project that WP-ES dedicates to this subject. As I have Galician friends I know the meaning of oleiro, and I have had the pleasure of creating some articles dedicated to oleiros such as Niñodaguía or Buño. 3) I find it interesting to look for a relationship between this photo and the pottery, but correctly. If something happens to me and you're interested, I'll tell you. Thanks for your attention.

  1. Diz-me que «categories of people, categorize people», muito bem. A Travessa do Oleiro homenageia um anónimo oleiro, o qual é/foi alguém (people) — daí a categorização que apus a Category: Travessa do Oleiro está correcta e a sua reduziu-lhe a precisão. (Para o resto do argumento que ajunta, veja-se §3, infra.)
  2. Ou seja: não tem desculpa.

I guess "unused" now means "delete". Also, InstantCommons users can go fuck themselves. The file was a .jpg of a BSicon like File:BSicon uexhKRZWa.svg (similar to that one but not the same). While .jpg is a bad format for this, closing the DR with the message "non controversial maintenance", implying this could have been speedied.. Sometimes, mostly not. But all the systematic files from the coordinated effort are in the catalogue. So if such an icon is not in the catalogue and not in use, it can be removed safely as non controversial maintenance.   • Thanks, @Alexis Jazz: Looks like the line across is somewhat close to 3399FF, while the wavy line is 003399, instead the usual 069DD3. The icon semantics is line across over wet culvert — therefore closest to   (uWBRÜCKE2).
