Hi! It has come to my attention that you have removed a warning which says that a file doesn't have enough information about the source or license conditions. Nevertheless, it seems to me that this information is still missing and I have restored the tag. You may either add the required information or, if you think that required information is already given, put the image up for a deletion request so that it won't automatically be deleted. Thank you.

High Contrast (talk) 22:29, 20 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

As happened here. the source is plainly given: "US Army FM 20-32" and "US Army Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC)" is not considered a valid source here on Commons. Both statements by the uploader do not verify that this file was made by a U.S. Army soldier or employee. Thanks for understanding. --High Contrast (talk) 22:31, 20 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Nard the Bard,

Are you aware that this picture has been nominated before, and kept ? If so, please add to your reason for nomination why you think it should be deleted - responding to the previous comments to Keep. –Krinkletalk 19:06, 27 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Taking photgraphs in a free country

[edit]

Hi, Nard the Bard, when you added a comment to a deletion resquest a couple of weeks ago you seemed to think after reading the Commons:Freedom of panorama page that photography in Ireland would be restricted in an outdoors place if another photograph happened to be on display. There are no restrictions in Ireland on taking pictures of a place such as a city center. I mean try and tell the newspapers or the TV news that they would infringe copyright by taking pictures there, it wouldn't wash, people would be hanging photographs up everywhere. I think you should review the guideline to see how it gave you that impression, because I would agree that it does seem to give that impression, and correct it. One of the references in the UK section explains how the owner of a gallery does not automatically get the license to copy artwork just because it is on display in his "public place" gallery but that would not apply to art displayed on the outside of his building which passers by just happened to photograph. You can photgraph anything so long as you are not trespassing as with any country with freedom of press. The only restrictions on press here that I can think of apply to minors who are involved with the courts and their identities are protected. Anyway what do you think? It should be more clear shouldn't it? I will leave it with you but if you want someone to work with you and change it I will try to help or advise. All best ~ R.T.G 14:21, 29 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • Commons applies the copyright laws literally and does not follow fair use or fair dealing. News outlets will not have a problem showing a picture of an event in public but Commons requires items to be free of copyright. What if someone wanted to sell photographs of this work of art on mugs and T-shirts? Irish copyright law does not support this use. -Nard the Bard 22:48, 9 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

This DR

[edit]

I had just asked Admin MGA73 on this image when you suddenly intervened. It could be own work as I mentioned to him....or it could be a 'panoramio wash.' With a DR filed by you, this image will surely be gone in 1 week now since I have no account on panoramio to contact the copyright owner If he did indeed upload the image on his own initiative. (I have only flickr) I wish you could have waited a while...or at least make a response on MGA73's talkpage now on your views after you read my message. What is your evidence for a panoramiowash? I don't know the answers, so I ask MGA73 here. What else can I do? Maybe, he knows the situation more as an experinced Admin. With best Regards, --Leoboudv (talk) 04:22, 27 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • I will ask that you please withdraw the nomination here and let MGA73 (Michael) in Denmark make a decision on the picture. He may have an account on panoramio for all I know. It seems to be based in Europe with so many Russian and European photos coming from this site. I will follow what MGA73 decides. Thank You sir or Madam. Regards from Vancouver, Canada, --Leoboudv (talk) 08:37, 27 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Maybe you have seen my further message to MGA73. I haven't a clue who has a panoramio account here sadly who can be trusted. It looks like MGA doesn't. --Leoboudv (talk) 20:18, 27 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Nard the Bard. You have new messages at Alpha Quadrant's talk page.

The reason I closed the deletion discussion was because the nominator only nominated it because we had a disagreement on wikipedia and wanted to get back at me. The other delete votes were by his friends on wikipedia. A few other people voted in the discussion. Either way, what ever happens to the image is fine, I am just going to leave wikimedia commons for good and go back to Wikipedia AFC. bye. --Alpha Quadrant (talk) 19:38, 28 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The functionality of the template {{Rename}} has recently changed. You might need to clear your cache to see the changes. If successful you should then be able to use the new "Quick adding" link in the template to instruct CommonsDelinker to replace the old name with the new name in all wikis. Possibly blanked or 'vandalised' description pages

[edit]

First, a confession, - I'd been using the following to try and find unlicensed images : http://toolserver.org/~erwin85/shortpages.php?lang=&family=commons&namespaces=6&filter=notemplates&limit=500

However, I've been informed that Commons has a bot that catches bad uploads, meaning the older one in that list must have missing licenses for other reasons..

I'll have another look at my recent tags but would appreciate a second opinion on them. Sfan00_IMG's recent tagging here : (I note some have already been reviewed). http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?limit=50&tagfilter=&title=Special%3AContributions&contribs=user&target=Sfan00+IMG&namespace=6&tagfilter=&year=&month=-1 Sfan00 IMG (talk) 12:06, 13 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

File:Ubiquinol molecule.png

[edit]

Thanks so much for sorting out File:Ubiquinol molecule.png - jpeg2000 format!

I didn't know of that one, so - in chatting to the user in live-help here, I tried several things.

The image worked fine in Fire Fox, not in Internet Explorer.

I downloaded it, opened it in PhotoShop and re-saved, thinking maybe headers were corrupt - still did same.

I then uploaded it to another website - and realised it was not just a Mediawiki thing.

Then, I made a whole new version using a 'printscreen' - and that was my 'temp fix'.

After that, I saw your deletion reason, and...superb - I learned something new, too. Excellent.

So - many, many thanks.  Chzz  ►  00:42, 16 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Beiroet 1959, Barcelona 1955 and Logo Middellandse Zeespelen

[edit]

I added these pictures with a source, I'm new here and I don't understand which permission is needed for this kind of logo's. It's ok on the English en Italian Wikipedia, why is it wrong on the Dutch Wikipedia? I hope someone can help before these pics are removed. Tumtumtum (talk) 16:04, 4 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Commons does not accept fair use, and the cc-by licenses you've applied to the files are obviously false. The files aren't even 70 years old, which means they're still under copyright in Europe. -Nard (Hablemonos)(Let's talk) 16:36, 4 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
And what about the logo of the Games of 2009 for example? They obviously aren't 70 years old, why are they displayed, and can I use that license? Tumtumtum (talk) 17:08, 4 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The logo might be all right as {{Pd-textlogo}}. I don't think the posters are going to be allowed though. -Nard (Hablemonos)(Let's talk) 17:11, 4 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Several problems

[edit]

I ask thee to do following things:

Please stop issue false warnings as thou did to Polack, because such users never were reverted, see his edit history, he was even indignated with such false accusations.
Please undelete File:Videostrada Cyfra+ menu with Canal+ channels.jpg, it features only logo bouquet analogous to already permissible File:CANAL+LE BOUQUET.gif.

I guess that abovementioned user barely knows English, because his edit comments are in Polackish. As thou see, he is not vandalistic in his intentions. Thanks for understanding. 89.238.153.10 17:12, 4 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The warning was for this edit[1]. Try to pay more attention when you edit an image. I am not an admin so I can't undelete files. -Nard (Hablemonos)(Let's talk) 17:30, 4 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I think that this warning was unnecessary, as someone else fixed it before. I propose while warning users, include diff in warnings, as Polack did to another vandal here. Please ask some admin to undelete File:Videostrada Cyfra+ menu with Canal+ channels.jpg if thou can. Note that both files have analogous design. 89.238.169.137 17:46, 4 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Users should be warned for that no matter, whether their edits were in the meantime reverted or not. Regarding the file: Please open a request here--DieBuche (talk) 17:57, 4 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I forgot to tell that both files have nearly the same design principles, when comparing File:Videostrada Cyfra+ menu with Canal+ channels.jpg and File:CANAL+LE BOUQUET.gif. 89.238.169.137 18:02, 4 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Old 2007 & 2008 images

[edit]

I don't have much time to discuss process with you and I'm not a lawyer. Just allow me to say that bare permissions to use images for wikipedia which were uploaded in 2007 and 2008 was acceptable at that time. Please do not think that I make these things up. I always ask questions carefully from other Admins before I act (as I asked Lupo here) and sometimes I subject an image to a DR to let the entire community to decide to keep or delete. Lupo told me it was in 2009 that COM:OTRS became pre-eminent and a bare permission given over panoramio, flickr, etc became insufficient. As for the 17 images uploaded in 2008 from sammito antoine's account by Dr Fo, they have now all been deleted I see...as is proper since I only found 1 permission for 1 image only and none for the rest. Thank You, --Leoboudv (talk) 07:17, 6 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • I tag dozens of images a day for deletion. I don't know which one you're talking about. I do know older images had more lax standards. If there's a justification for keeping one by all means just change the tagging as appropriate and add a talk page note. -Nard (Hablemonos)(Let's talk) 10:04, 6 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • That's what I usually do too. But the image file must have been uploaded in 2007 or 2008 for me to pass them. If its 2009, the broad permission is not enough and they get DR'ed. Its up to the uploader to get the license changed. (and this has happened a few times for picasa, flickr and panoramio images but very rarely) Thank You, --Leoboudv (talk) 19:13, 6 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Re: File:Uexheimlimekiln.jpg

[edit]

Nard, can I ask why you nominated this image for deletion for lack of an OTRS certificate when in fact the brick for the OTRS certificate is clearly visible under the licence information?Kelisi (talk) 13:57, 6 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • The license was updated by someone else after I nominated it for deletion. Just putting The OTRS template on an image isn't enough, there has to be an OTRS ticket number, which wasn't transfered when the image was transwikied. -Nard (Hablemonos)(Let's talk) 16:21, 6 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

A Comment

[edit]

I do regularly file DRs on old panoramio images. In fact I just did this here recently. Usually I give clear reasonable reasons for my DR....like can one expect a newbie to understand all of Commons licensing policies after uploading only a few images here? In this case, I don't think the uploader here intentionally uploaded a copyvio. He likely didn't know what Commons licensing policies were. So, its preferable that this be deleted only after 1 week notice has been served as I have done. This is not comparable to the photo of the Mona Lisa or this image which I uploaded. Or even this crown which I also uploaded. These are true works of art. Today sadly all photography in the Cairo Museum has been banned since September 2005. That is a real shame.

Luckily, the copyright owners know and trust me; so they changed the license to let the images pass flickr review. Regards, --Leoboudv (talk) 06:43, 7 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Two images

[edit]

I'm sorry to say this but I think these 2 images have reached the end of their lifetime here. I doubt Commons can keep them any longer:

The first is unused and the second is used but the npd tags has been placed on them for 13 days now. I think they have to be deleted sadly. Thank You, --Leoboudv (talk) 07:35, 8 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Nard:

With all due respect re your note to me (RogerR00) about the Clint Didier image as follows: (Please send a permission for File:Clint_Didier_2010.jpg to OTRS)

When I uploaded the Clint Didier image to his Wikipedia page, I forwarded the signed letter confirming ownership of the image and authorizing it as per the appropriate copyright on Wikipedia to OTRS as directed by the copyright instructions. Mr. Didier is the subject of the image, owns the image, and has authorized it appropriately per Wikipedia rules. I do not understand your objection to its inclusion on Wikipedia, since I clearly followed the rules TO THE LETTER. Please review your intention to delete this image, and if you still believe that it is not appropriately licensed, please explain in further detail about what you think I did wrong on my RogerR00 talk page. Thanks.

Sources of images

[edit]

Hi! Referring to your reply here, I'd like to ask if I have marked the sources as they should be. Here are a couple of examples: [2], [3], [4]. The user who has uploaded these images, Cimmerian praetor, has collected a lot of old and useful photos here, but as he didn't know the practices here, they might be missing some information. He has used the images on his articles in English Wikipedia, I have used them in the Finnish one. Now, as I have seen, many of his photos are under threat because of incomplete information. Regarding the three images above, I have made the needed changes and they should be ok in my understanding.(?) So can I take off the template that claims the photos are missing the sources? Or if I leave the files as they are, will someone check the image datas before deleting?

I am not familiar with the Commons practices either, I only occasionally use it as supplement of the Wikipedia articles I work on. --Gwafton (talk) 22:59, 22 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
