Translations of POTY

What is the meaning of "POTY Category tops" in Translations:Commons:Picture of the Year/2013/Rules/46/it? Thanks — Raoli ✉ (talk) 03:29, 14 January 2014 (UTC)

User:Raoli, this is unclear even in English. After researching a bit, I found that it refers to the most popular image in each topical category. The most popular image from each category in Round 1 goes on to Round 2. Does that help? —Mono 15:40, 14 January 2014 (UTC)
I had thought that "tops" was a typo instead of "topics". --Raoli ✉ (talk) 18:33, 14 January 2014 (UTC)

Hi, Mono. :) I wanted to ask if this page is still under construction. It's had the tag for about a month now - it's looking good to me, and I often like to refer people who write answers@ to page on the projects that explain better how to contribute. Given the tag, I'm not sure if it's ready for them (though it seems to me to be), and I worry that the tag would confuse them if I sent them there. Figured I'd better ask. Thanks! --Maggie Dennis (WMF) (talk) 11:41, 14 January 2014 (UTC)

The short answer is no. (The tags are gone now). Long answer: Onboarding new users has been a major priority at the WMF for Wikipedia. Doing the same with Commons is not a huge priority and I can certainly see why. When I began, the first steps tour was very much out of date (screenshots and instructions for the pre-Upload Wizard era). It's now closer to the present, although I'm not confident I addressed all the problems. The navigation? structure could use some help as well - it's always better to walk a user through something rather than tell them and then hope they remember. That's something even the Upload Wizard never addressed. So the tag can be removed, but the page is far from perfect for new users. The layout is inconsistent on smaller screens, the text needs refining, etc. But essentially my priorities have shifted and it is no longer one. —Mono 15:38, 14 January 2014 (UTC)
Please add "Photos of you not taken by you. The copyright holder is the person who take the photograph unless it is a formal work for hire." too under Commons:First_steps/Contributing: What is not allowed on Commons. Many people think they hold the copyright of their portraits in spite of whoever photograph it. Jee 06:08, 15 January 2014 (UTC)

Picture of the Year 2013 R2 Announcement

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2013 is open!

2012 Picture of the Year: A pair of European Bee-eaters in Ariège, France.

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 7 March 2014. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2013/Introduction/en Click here to learn more and vote »]

Request for feedback on my GSoC'14 proposal

Hi Mono,

I am planning to work on the project titled "Tools for mass migration of legacy translated wiki content" this summer under Google Summer of Code. I have drafted a proposal for the same over the past few weeks. This project is going to help the translation adminstrators like you in a great way, as it would completely automate the tedious manual task of preparing a page for translation and then importing the translations into the Translate extension. You can check the proposal page for detailed information on how I plan to accomplish this.

As you would be an end user of this tool, it would be great if you could go through the proposal and provide feedback/suggestions. Your feedback would definitely help me improve the proposal as well help in creating an even better tool. You can do the same on the discussion page of the proposal or reply here, whichever is convenient for you. I look forward to hearing from you! Thank you!

P.S: I need to submit the proposal to Google by March 19, 2014.

Commons:Picture of the Year-2013-Protection has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this project page, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Please test the new feature Special:PageMigration

As a Google Summer of Code Intern, I have been working on the Mass Migration tools project for Wikimedia. We are now ready with a minimal working product. The tool helps translators and translation administrators import the old translations into the Translate Extension.

An instance of the same has been set up on labs. You can find some useful instructions on the main page.

Please test the tool and report bugs/suggestions using the link provided on the main page itself. You can have a look at the tracking bug to check already reported bugs.

It is a common issue that people have difficulties reading statistics. They interpret them in so many awkward ways. Of course RotateLink wasn't used a lot before it became default. But immediately after it became popular: You have to have knowledge about history to understand why. Usability: If you disable defaults you should at least attempt to understand whether they are currently used. If you would have asked me, I would have provided you with a way to enable the gadget for people that really make use of it before dropping the default flag. I will bring this up to COM:AN for wider input. -- Rillke(q?) 07:52, 22 June 2014 (UTC)

@Rillke: I've read that page and disabling that gadget as default was a mistake. However, it's come to my attention that the project needs a broader discussion about gadgets; there are far too many and unnecessary ornamentation is just that—unnecessary. It confuses new users and slows everything down. In the coming days, I'll start a RFC on the state of gadgets here where the project can discuss the issue. —Mono (how to reply) 21:44, 22 June 2014 (UTC)

Anyway: Could you please stand back from disabling Gadgets without any kind of prior notification in future? We just had a discussion why the ImprovedUploadForm suddenly "broke" on German Wikipedia. A small hint on COM:VP would probably be enough, so people know at least that the Gadget might disable itself and have a chance to change their settings accordingly. --Patrick87 (talk) 15:39, 24 June 2014 (UTC)

@Patrick87: Apologies, all gadgets that were previously marked as default remain marked as default at this time. In the near future, I'll start a broad discussion about the state of gadgets here on Commons. Any future changes based on that discussion will be announced before they are made. Thanks, —Mono (how to reply) 20:41, 24 June 2014 (UTC)
all gadgets that were previously marked as default remain marked as default at this time - I don't understand. ImprovedUploadForm is still non-default. -- Rillke(q?) 21:22, 24 June 2014 (UTC)
@Rillke: I was under the impression that User:Steinsplitter reverted all changes...if it's still disable, I will re-enable it now. —Mono (how to reply) 18:08, 25 June 2014 (UTC)
Someone else fixed it. —Mono (how to reply) 18:09, 25 June 2014 (UTC)
With the diff feature of MediaWiki it is quite easy to find out what has been reverted and what not. Looking forward for a good RfC with comprehensive statistics and explanations. Thanks for taking this burden something must be really done about the JS load. Especially jQuery UI button which is loaded as soon as you insert {{Clickable button}} (and variants) somewhere (currently also loaded by AjaxQuickDelete) consumes a lot of resources. If you need some help or advice, just ping me. -- Rillke(q?) 20:13, 25 June 2014 (UTC)
Thanks for your understanding Mono. I can only support your idea of disabling certain Gadgets by default since most users will probably only use a very small set that they should best pick on their own instead of serving every users with multiple Gadgets he'll never use. But it should always be done with great care to not confuse those users that actually used (but never explicitly enabled) a Gadget. --Patrick87 (talk) 21:32, 24 June 2014 (UTC)

Response to Steinsplitter

Wider input? Rotatelink is not consuming a lot of code and i don't see we should disabled image rotation for all users? I think we should bring up Monos interface change on AN/U. I have noticed that this is not the first time that admins has reverted Monos change (@changes in the style). --Steinsplitter (talk) 10:37, 22 June 2014 (UTC)

And rollbacked this to restore the "Global usage" link. --Steinsplitter (talk) 19:51, 22 June 2014 (UTC)
@Steinsplitter: it's starting to feel like you are following me around. I know you're active, but here you seem to be the only person that actually minds. I looked and you are the only person who has reverted/undone an edit of mine in three months... With regards to the gadgets, I was mistaken about how two of the gadgets were used. I still believe that ExtraTabs should not be default. Anyway, you're not obligated to respond here; just wanted to let you know what I'm seeing here. If you have a problem with what I'm doing in general, let's talk about it. —Mono (how to reply) 21:44, 22 June 2014 (UTC)
I don't have a problem with you, i have seen the pages on my watchlist. I think the global usage link is helpful, mabye the gadget can be cleaned up a bit? --Steinsplitter (talk) 21:48, 22 June 2014 (UTC)
Ah, that makes sense. I avoid editing the gadget code at all costs, since my JS knowledge is mediocre and it usually takes me a 100 tries to get something to work right. But I think gadget cleanup is warranted, whether it's combining similar ones or breaking some apart. —Mono (how to reply) 21:53, 22 June 2014 (UTC)

Translation help

Hi. Can you please change Commons:First steps/Contributing in a way to eliminate single brackets in translations. The section 23 makes problem in saving. Also if you can merge sections 23 and 24 it will be great (the sentence structure is not like this in all languages). Many thanks -- Meisam (talk) 22:17, 16 August 2014 (UTC)

Commons Twitter account

Hi Mono, just wanted to find out if you are the individual who operates the Wikimedia Commons Twitter account at https://twitter.com/wikicommons Cheers, russavia (talk) 21:50, 23 August 2014 (UTC)

Not anymore, but what is it that you need? —Mono (how to reply) 23:43, 24 August 2014 (UTC)
Can you tell us who does control the account now? It's being well under utilised and some of us have ideas on how it could be used to maximum potential. russavia (talk) 09:56, 25 August 2014 (UTC)
Here's the scoop: Technically, the WMF is in charge of it, but they haven't done anything recently AFAIK and their communications department keeps being reshuffled. I've done most of it in the past, but I'm not totally interested anymore. I can get you (and others) the account information, so I'm going to check with the WMF because it is a quasi-official account and I don't want to cause any headaches for you, me or them. When Matthew Roth worked at the WMF, we talked about giving control to the Commons community but no one was really interested in making access/control a community process at that time...it's a job that is best done by more than one person. Anyway, I'll contact the WMF tomorrow to give them a heads up and I'll let you know where I'm at ASAP. Thanks, —Mono (how to reply) 04:37, 26 August 2014 (UTC)
Actually, the WMF social media team posted two retweets on @wikicommmons just yesterday (before we saw this discussion). That said, Russavia is correct in saying that the feed could use more content.
Mono, I'm not sure if you're aware of it, but before he left, Matthew and I set up a mechanism for easy contribution by community members, also to other official accounts like @wikipedia and @wikimedia: Just send proposed content to the public social media mailing list by emailing social-media@lists.wikimedia.org, and we'll review and post it. (We also post our own tweets there for review, and community members who are interested in participating in the review process are welcome to subscribe to the list.)
The information about this process has been available on m:Social media for a while, and quite a few community members have contributed this way already, but I realize that not every interested party might be aware of it yet. I'll add this to Commons:Social media now.

Code issues in User:Mono/common.js

Hi Mono, I am a bored bot (this is kind of a computer program) that is watching the recent changes and tapping buttons like I did now.

Curious about the reason? Possibly not but I will tell you anyway:

  1. You edited User:Mono/common.js. Glad to see you coding in javascript! Have you ever considered becoming a MediaWiki hacker?
  2. Though, that change appears to introduce 6 new jshint issues — the page's status is now having ERRORS. Note that invalid or ambiguous code often has unwanted side effects like breaking other tools for you. If you cannot find out how to fix it, I suggest blanking the page for now.
  3. To help you understanding where the issues are, I have aggregated a report here and now. If you have questions, don't hesitate to ask users experienced in javascript writing for help. But do not ask the bot's operators (chronically overwrought) unless you suspect an error of mine. If you prefer not getting spammed by me, you can opt-out reports by adding {{ValidationOptOut|type=all}} to your user page or cmb-opt-out anywhere on your your global user page on Meta. Good luck at Wikimedia Commons and happy hacking!
  1. ISSUE: line 1 character 1: Expected an identifier and instead saw '<'. - Evidence: <nowiki>
  2. ISSUE: line 1 character 1: Expected an assignment or function call and instead saw an expression. - Evidence: <nowiki>
  3. ISSUE: line 1 character 2: Missing semicolon. - Evidence: <nowiki>
  4. ISSUE: line 2 character 1: Expected an identifier and instead saw 'var'. - Evidence: var customizeToolbar = function() {
  5. ISSUE: line 2 character 5: Unrecoverable syntax error. (5% scanned). - Evidence: undefined

Summer of Monuments

Hi Mono, thank you for locking the Summer of Monuments page to protect it from vandalism. I would appreciate if you could enable me to edit, since I am responsible for the page and have some new content to add. We are clearly getting a lot of curious people on the page who don't know all that much about editing Wikipedia or uploading photos, and I would like to give them a few more clues to what we're about. Merci :-) Monumenteer2014 (talk) 15:53, 5 September 2014 (UTC)

I've reduced the protection level so you can edit the page. Please keep an eye out for vandalism, since this setup isn't very secure. Please request temporary sysop rights ASAP because CentralNotice-linked pages ought to be fully protected. —Mono (how to reply) 00:57, 6 September 2014 (UTC)

File:Just testing.png has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!
