Moin moin! The photograph doesn't contain a specimen, any objection to delete this one? Cheers! --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 09:32, 25 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Please don't delete, this type of image is valuable for taxonomists. Experts at Naturalis (Leiden, the Netherlands) have told me this when i uploaded seemingly "empty" images of plants and here molluscs because a change in the species name is shown. (The companion image File:Naturalis Biodiversity Center - RMNH.MOL.120792 - Incisura lyttletonensis (Smith, 1894) - Scissurellidae - Mollusc shell.jpeg shows the minuscule specimens.) Thanks for keeping this image Hansmuller (talk) 21:21, 25 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed, I left a message on the DR page. Thanks for your fast reply! C(_) --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 02:00, 26 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

NIMH

[edit]

Are you still using List of registration numbers for the images in Category:Songbird specimens at Naturalis Biodiversity Center? It has 1,420,531 bytes of wiki-code, and should be split if still needed. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 19:50, 30 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Same with List of species and genera in Category:Mollusc specimens at Naturalis Biodiversity Center, 663,303 bytes. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 19:53, 30 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Pigsonthewing @Andy Mabbett Hi Andy, i hope you are well (we once met at a hackathon in Amsterdam where you asked me to do a Van Gogh translation for the New Art Gallery Walsall.) Yes, i think those lists are practical to have a ready handle (e.g., lookup table) on the donation of Naturalis for their curators without them having to do a query. I check species with the species list. (1,4 Mb isn't that large, is it? But then i was an astronomer.) Cheers, Hansmuller (talk) 10:20, 31 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
PS1 Perhaps you know whether there is a policy for the administration/tracking of such large donations. I'll add a report in English for the Naturalis project.
PS2 Files are within the limit set by Commons:Maximum file size. Some biology buffs were active (up to 2017) trying to fit in the species on the species list in the taxonomy. Hansmuller (talk) 12:56, 31 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Re [1] et al.

Please stop removing images from this category. Andy Dingley (talk) 10:42, 17 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Andy Dingley , Excuse me, i thought i did not remove images from this category, have a look. Photographs were put illogically in double categories, that was confusing, i hope i have remedied that. Please don't put files twice in redundant categories. So please not a picture both in say cat. Photographer in Ataka AND in cat. Ataka. Wikimedians don't want that. (I experienced that previously with 275000 pictures from Naturalis, for example in Category:Mollusca specimens at Naturalis Biodiversity Center). Thank you. Hansmuller (talk) 10:51, 17 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Andy Dingley , O i'm sorry, you're right, i see i made some mistakes. Thanks! Hansmuller (talk) 11:02, 17 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding Naturalis uploads

[edit]

Hi, I was looking at some of the images you uploaded from the Naturalis center. I edited an image (File:RMNH.MOL.156397 Cytora pallida cropped with scale bar.jpg) to include a scale bar based on the width of the QR given as 38 mm, and I just wanted to confirm with you whether the width of the card is 38 mm, or if it is in fact the QR code that's 38 mm. Cheers, —Mikemoral♪♫ 07:25, 26 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Mikemoral: @Mikemoral Thank you for your excellent question which i should have answered clearly right at the start on Category:Mollusca at Naturalis from the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie when uploading. I now have done so, with as example the photograph you probably used for extraction (?, because you mention the other image File:Naturalis Biodiversity Center - RMNH.MOL.156397 1 - Cytora pallida Hutton - Liareidae - Mollusc shell.jpeg with has no shells). Please check if this explanation is clear enough. Thanks, Hansmuller (talk) 08:34, 26 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
It seems I linked the wrong photo when I uploaded, which I didn't notice until now. Thanks for pointing it out, I'll fix that shortly. So if I'm understanding it correctly, it's the width of the black line above "Liareida... 40431" that measures 38 mm long? It would mean that my image scaling was wrong, since my scale makes it ~30 mm wide. —Mikemoral♪♫ 08:48, 26 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
No i was told is was the width of the text string which was formatted in a standard way apparently, not the black line, i apologize. I'm sorry Naturalis didn't use a simple scale bar. Thanks for your interest! Hansmuller (talk) 08:52, 26 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Mikemoral: @Mikemoral I'm emailing and asking a Naturalis mollusc collection expert to be sure. Hansmuller (talk) 08:56, 26 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Many thanks for doing so. I must admit confusing me still, though I think that might just be the way the museum described it. Thanks for responding so quickly! I figured it would be helpful to include a small scale bar to give a better sense of width of shells, as well as crop out the taxonomic information.. —Mikemoral♪♫ 09:00, 26 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Mikemoral: @Mikemoral I've corrected a numerical error on the page Category:Mollusca at Naturalis from the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie. As long as the originals with taxonomy are conserved and linked, no information is lost and of course scale bars are extremely useful. (Just speculating: there still must be many tiny mollusc species which are undiscovered up to now.). I'll keep you posted (the definitive answer might take some time, my Naturalis mollusc expert(s) might be on holiday now.) Cheers, Hansmuller (talk) 09:25, 26 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
There's almost certainly new molluscs to discover. Even still, we have to sort out molluscs we already know and make sure we have classified them correctly. Some like w:Notoplax rubiginosa got names that changed later on to reflect what zoologists know about the molluscs. Thanks again for your time. —Mikemoral♪♫ 09:48, 26 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I doubt that the dutch AVG (which handles processing personal data) avoids people from making pictures in the public space. So no reason to delete these images. If we have to, we should delete *all* images every made in The Netherlands where there is one pixel of a person, and that can't be true. Edoderoo (talk) 09:16, 5 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hansmuller (talk) 11:59, 16 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hallo Hansmuller, only me again...

Eissink (talk) 11:55, 5 October 2019 (UTC).[reply]

(Aantekeningen: Copyright_rules_by_territory/Nigeria , idem Somalia , idem Somaliland , idem South Africa , Robben Island infow@robben-island.org.za , two-dimensional art in public spaces )

Tiff picture file 88MB

[edit]
File:Affiche Sida.jpg

Hello.

Thanks a lot adding your picture in Wikipedia "ASC_Leiden_-_van_Achterberg_Collection_-_1_-_147_-_Un_panneau_routier_avertit_de_l'infection_par_le_SIDA._"Le_SIDA_tue._Ensemble_stoppons_le_SIDA"_-_En_route_de_Bamako_pour_Ségou,_Mali_-_9-29_novembre_1996.tif". Unfortunately it size is really huge (88 MB !), in an inappropriate file format, and with a too long file name. This kind of picture should only weight about 3 or 4 MB. I did geometric changes and light corrections on your picture, and store it in jpeg format with a shorter name, that only weight 3 MB now, that I sent in this page. Details about the place, the date, and comment shouldn't be inserted in the file name, but in Wikipedia descriptions fields. I advise you to delete your previous file and send again this version with your own.

Best regards. --GodefroyParis (talk) 11:14, 26 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Dear @GodefroyParis, Thank you for your interest, but what is your problem? There are some misunderstandings, nowadays everything i did is just standard and easily achievable. (Please don't call me "Hello".)
The original with author, source and other metadata, such as descriptions in more languages.
  • large version a problem, why? No, Wikipedia does NOT use the 88 MB version in the webpage SIDA where i put the image, but automatically a standard small version. On Commons you'll find a lot (5) of smaller versions included on the page
File:ASC_Leiden_-_van_Achterberg_Collection_-_1_-_147_-_Un_panneau_routier_avertit_de_l'infection_par_le_SIDA._"Le_SIDA_tue._Ensemble_stoppons_le_SIDA"_-_En_route_de_Bamako_pour_Ségou,_Mali_-_9-29_novembre_1996.tif .
So it is NOT necessary to create a secondary image. The original loads quickly, because a small version is used...
  • too long file name, why? The file name is NOT too long, why would it be? MediaWiki, Unix etcetera support long filenames. Now you can tell what the image shows without having to look up the metadata, very practical to many users. So yes, all the important data should be included in the file name. I have used long descriptive filenames in nearly 280.000 uploads to Commons without problems.
  • wrong format, why? No, .jpg is lossy, so tif(f) is the best there is, for any graphical use with the most information included, ask a publishing house, that's why the file is huge, there you are right. It should be.
  • wrong author. By the way, I see you put the wrong author on your version, you probably did not notice, but you violated the copyright, please correct. You did not include the metadata and the source.
If you don't understand, we can discuss all of this further.
PS If my French in the metadata is wrong here and there, could you be so kind to correct it? (I take it that you are French?) Thanks a lot, Hansmuller (talk) 21:37, 27 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
PS2 @GodefroyParis You are right, in that your version is brighter and so looks better (but it does no longer contain the full original information), thanks! You can indicate in your metadata that your version is a version of the original image, key word "other_versions=". Can i include your derived version in the collection Category:Images from the African Studies Centre (Leiden)? Merci! Hansmuller (talk) 10:55, 29 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
PS3 Dear @GodefroyParis I have fielded a question about .tif(f) at Commons:Village_pump#.tif(f)_or_.jpg/.jpeg_image_files?
In the end, this smaller version was deleted by Hedwig_in_Washington because metadata was lacking, Hansmuller (talk) 12:10, 10 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Naamgeving File:ASC Leiden - van de Bruinhorst Collection

[edit]

Multichill (talk) 11:34, 3 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Multichill Beste Multichill,

Category:Photographs_by_Ohannes_Kurkdjian_from_KITLV
bijvoorbeeld voor
File:KITLV - 154157 - Kurkdjian, N.V. Photografisch Atelier - Soerabaia-Java - Borobudur in Magelang - circa 1915.tiff

(In w:c:Category:Images from the Tropenmuseum / Wereldculturen staan de plaatjes nu op alfabetische volgorde van de beschrijving "A bridal", "A man" etc., fraai?) Vriendelijke groet, Hansmuller (talk) 09:02, 9 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Important message for file movers

[edit]

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

  • To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
  • To perform file name swaps.
  • When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:35, 7 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
