Thanks for uploading File:Eliazer Neuburger - Emanuel Boekman - deel schilderij.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

Hello... Thanks for the info. I guess the pictures I took are about the paintings and their components (i.e., frame, altar, chapel, etc.) not the sole paintings themselves that cropped everything around it off. That's why I think I can say I am the 'author' of the images -- not the paintings I took of course. Cheers --Mattis (talk) 14:37, 31 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I have looked around wiki to see how others define their works and wonder when a picture can become the property of the photographer -- how far away from the paintings or statues do we have to be?? It appears that a vast majority of work of art objects are copyrighted by the photographer. Thanks for the insight. --Mattis (talk) 15:25, 31 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I am going back to my original discussion that if an image is solely of an object, then it certainly belongs to the artist who originated it. However, if the photographer takes a picture with an art object as a part of the whole, then the composition become a new image and it belongs to the the photographer who then by default becomes the 'author'. I don't claim to know the law but it makes sense. Take for example, if I take a picture of a chapel or an altar -- the chapel/altar is not one object but it can be composed of several components that may include the main painting, the frame, the decorations above the paintings, the ceiling, subsidiary paintings, components of the chapel, etc. -- all these are done by different arttists at different times. So my picture is a composite. Anyway, this seems to be very grey area. I probably can't discuss this any longer -- my Internet is dying. --Mattis (talk) 16:09, 31 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Done and Thanks for your help, notice in my oversight or having overlooked the empty description; actually I deviated from my usual links and instead tried to wikify the english articles of Wikipedia, but I often overlook the templates and other mechanics, but they only happen in the description, therefore, I make sure the the reader of the pictures go to my description in the Category and they will see the full description; I admit that often my description is long unlike other editors; this is because most of my photos are valued, rare and heritage, most are not yet photographed due to security reasons in troubled Philippines; best regards and sincerely--Judgefloro (talk) 12:21, 8 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

A. C. Oudemans Collection

[edit]

Hello! I greatly appreciate you uploading all these files. You've probably noticed that I'm trying to categorize them in respect of current taxonomy. On doing it I found misspelling in the epithet: the caption of these two files (1, 2) is Periglischrus iheringi, not Periglischrus jheringi. So I've renamed the files hoping that won't make any obstacles for your work. Mithril (talk) 18:31, 25 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks a lot! On the description pages at Bioportal they have it wrong also. but the filenames on Commons seem to be OK. I'm glad an expert takes an active interest! PS Gbif concurs more or less, with a lot of question marks, and can't find P. jheringi. Regards, Hansmuller (talk) 09:54, 26 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Dear @Orchi, thanks for spotting this grave error - it appears in the upload two registration numbers were given, L 0058155 (wrong, as you found out) for the metadata, and L.1194235 for the image. Extinct bird videos

[edit]

Hi, do you know if the other extinct bird videos from Naturalis that have not been uploaded yet are free too? FunkMonk (talk) 16:40, 10 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@FunkMonk: yes, the license on for example http://bioportal.naturalis.nl/nba/result?language=nl&nba_request=http%253A%252F%252Fapi.biodiversitydata.nl%252Fv0%252F%252Fmultimedia%252Fget-multimedia-object-for-specimen-within-result-set%252F%253FunitID%253DRMNH.AVES.110000 states "CC0". However, we have been asked by Naturalis management to upload the remaining 130 or so extinct bird videos as CC-BY-SA-3.0. So in either case there is no problem. Don't over-categorize!

[edit]

Hi Hansmuller, please don't over-categorize your images. For instance in your File:Naturalis Biodiversity Center - RMNH.AVES.124617 1 - Tachycineta bicolor (Vieillot, 1808) - Hirundinidae - bird skin specimen.jpeg

For further information please read Commons:Categories, particularly paragraph Over-categorization. -- Ies (talk) 09:46, 15 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Ies: thanks for your reaction. It is hard for me to assess in a mass upload beforehand whether a category exists or not. To avoid non-categorisation i put organisms both in their supposed genus-category and species-category. The downside of this method is, that when a species-cat exists, nearly always a genus-cat also exists, leading to the problem you signal.
  • Do you have a suggestion to avoid this in an automated way?
Thanks, regards, Hansmuller (talk) 10:31, 15 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
PS. Nice dolphins you just uploaded! Hansmuller (talk) 10:54, 15 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Almost all species have their own category. For very rare species where there might not be, it is simple to take a quick look at each genus page before uploading to see which species if any are red-links — if there are, then create the relevant species category :-). Many species also have a subcategory "Species (taxidermied)" or "Species (museum specimens)"; where these exist, they should be used for specimens like these. Also, if there are numerous images of specimens of a taxon, it is well worth creating such subcategories (see e.g. my recent edits in Category:Hirundo and Category:Delichon) - MPF (talk) 23:47, 16 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@MPF: Yes, i know, thanks. "Almost all species have their own category": this is not my experience: see User:Hansmuller/Sandbox, where i list species and genera of my previous mass uploads from Naturalis (plants, mites, Japanese fish etc. water colours - perhaps the situation is better for birds, though i have found many bird species without a species category and some even without a genus category). Then there is the related taxonomy problem: on Commons the genus might be different from the genus in a database at Naturalis. I would like to have an automatic trick to give appropriate categories or determine before or during the upload whether a category exists. When uploading 100,000 bird images - if they are really available - i unfortunately cannot have systematic quick looks... the lot is a present from Naturalis, i have to take or leave it before December 1st, end of job. Mass uploads all have lamented problems with categorisation, unfortunately. So when a tool comes up, i will embrace it immediately. Kind regards, Hansmuller (talk) 07:35, 17 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! There shouldn't be any bird genera without categories except for an exceedingly small number of (mostly monotypic) rarities from remote areas which we don't have photos of. It could be taxonomic problems; at Commons we follow IOC's taxonomy as it is the most up-to-date. I have noticed one or two where yours used older names. Granted, there'll be fewer categories for plant species, and even less for mites and fish - they're not things that many people take photos of to donate to Commons! - MPF (talk) 07:46, 17 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Fæ: perhaps the bigger uploader User:Fæ has views on these problems, thanks. Hansmuller (talk) 07:37, 17 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

OK!! I'll leave them in that category, though won't remove the species categories I added (e.g. Category:Probosciger aterrimus (illustrations)). MPF (talk) 11:30, 22 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
In reply to ping—There are choices to be made for the uploader, there are no firm rules and, whichever path you take, there are always going to be some users who will wish you took a different one :-). In the case of my IA uploads, I use the Flickrtags as a starting point to check for possible categories, however I only add categories that exist on Commons under the same name or a redirect to the name - yeah that's pretty smart, do not have the diffuse or categorise templates on those categories, and limit the number of categories to be added to 5. For that particular project there is always the bucket category (hidden) and the book year category which already exists for all possible years in the history of publishing. In comparison, the BHL uploads do mostly the same thing, however on user request I include a category for the book title even where the category does not exist yet, it has turned out to be an easier approach for volunteers.
Essentially for great upload projects, you really do need to find a way to check category existence (in Pywikibot you use a call like page.exists(), using the Commons API directly you can call up the metadata for the page, though there's probably an even easier way). If you are using the GWToolset, this means doing the category checks at the time of generating a good XML file, as the GWT will not do this for you. It's invisible preparatory work, but worth it, and part of the responsibilities for the large batch uploader that most Commonsists will never know about. It's why we deserve far more barnstars. :-) -- (talk) 12:06, 17 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading File:Naturalis Biodiversity Center - Natuurkundige Commissie - Art by unknown - Bird species - MMNAT01 AF NNM001000165.jpg.

Thank you.

Identity checks needed

[edit]

Hi Hans - could you check these three, please:

All three are cited at source as Dendrocitta occipitalis cinerascens, a taxon from Borneo which has now been split at species rank from Dendrocitta [occipitalis] occipitalis from Sumatra. I renamed the first two to reflect the updated taxonomy, and was about to do so with the third, but saw that its curation tag states it is Dendrocitta occipitalis occipitalis and is from Sumatra; for this, I renamed the file to remove the cinerascens attribution.

The first two, I can't read the curation tags as they are text-side-down, but they need to be checked in the museum to see their source location. The third also needs checking with the museum staff to find out why they added the recent "D. o. cinerascens 180.016.002" tag: do they have good reason to believe that the Sumatra origin is incorrect, perhaps? Thanks! - MPF (talk) 21:30, 5 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@MPF Thanks for your interest. You ll find the flip side of the label on the previous version at the bottom of the page (in the first batch i didn't discriminate between say RMNH.AVES.101788 and RMNH.AVES.101788_1, so the latest upload - other side of the label - is recorded as a new version). I ll ask a curator about your other point. Best regards Hansmuller (talk) 07:48, 7 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! Renamed them per their curation tags - MPF (talk) 19:41, 13 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@MPF Naturalis bird curator Pepijn Kamminga commented that he deplores the "slightly dated nomenclature" in the Naturalis bird database. Regards, Hansmuller (talk) 14:04, 7 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I'd be surprised if there's any museum anywhere which has its nomenclature up to date :-) MPF (talk) 19:41, 13 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
They can't keep up, perhaps linked databases can fix this in the future. Hansmuller (talk) 09:14, 16 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Dear HansMuller, I changed the determination of the drawing with the head of an eagle form Spizaetus ornatus to Spilornis cheela.

Lotje (talk) 12:39, 25 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Template:Biohist not machine readable

[edit]

Hello Hans,

An attempt is made to make all information templates on commons machine readable, to allow for more automatic dereviation of information. The Template:Biohist which you created is not machine readable. Making you currently nr. 1 in this list. See also Commons:Machine-readable data. Also a ping @Jarekt as he is very familiar with information templates and machine readable data.

Mvg, Basvb (talk) 19:57, 12 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hans, the way we create new infoboxes is by extending old ones, that way as many as possible field names are translated to other languages and all the author/source etx are correctly marked and maintained as the standards change. Current set of standard infoboxes can be found at COM:Infobox templates. See for example Template:Fotothek-Description, Template:NARA-image-full or Template:Walters Art Museum artwork. --Jarekt (talk) 05:19, 13 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Basvb and @Jarekt,
  • good idea to make information templates machine readable.
  • what do you mean by "dereviation of information"?
  • the noinfo-list where i'm no 1. states "Hansmuller 4208" files, but Biohist is used 80.000+ times, suggesting that 76.000 files are machine readable and ok?
  • Biohist uses Template:Information as a model - just as some others. O, i copied Template:Information to Template:Biohist-information, perhaps there's the rub?
  • As this Template-business is intricate, could you as experts suggest improvements for Biohist?

Thanks, best regards, Hansmuller (talk) 13:11, 13 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hans, We on commons maintain only a few "official" infobox templates, all listed at COM:Infobox templates. All other infobox templates are created by expanding one of the "official" infoboxes, I would suggest {{Artwork}} which will have some extra fields and will call {{Cite journal}} and {{Taxonavigation}}. May be we should expand and adapt {{Specimen}} or {{Fossil}} templates? So here are the steps:
  1. create Template:Biohist/sandbox and only change that template for time being
  2. map as many current Biohist fields as possible to {{Artwork}} fields as well as {{Cite journal}} and {{Taxonavigation}} (do you need other similar templates)
  3. for all the rest of the fields we need to find if other templates already have i18n for them and if not than create Template:Biohist/i18n page where we will translate the field names. Se for example Template:Piłsudski Institute document/i18n or Template:NARA-image-full/I18n

Empty herbarium sheets

[edit]

Dear Hans Muller,

File:Naturalis Biodiversity Center - L.4015311 - Dicranopteris linearis (Burm.f.) Underw. var. ferruginea (Blume) Holttum - Gleicheniaceae - Plant type specimen.jpeg contains no plant. Should those files get deleted?--Kopiersperre (talk) 23:35, 25 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I was doubtful of this matter too, but experts on Wikipedia say in general labels show the naming history of types and are valuable. When Naturalis continues the upload of plant types a complete picture of the collection will emerge and criteria for deletion can be established. Regards, Hansmuller (talk) 10:37, 27 December 2015 (UTC) PS. I just enjoyed your nice charts Hansmuller (talk) 10:44, 27 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
