The coastal site of ancient Arkesine (Ἀρκεσίνη).

Early Bronze Age settlement and cemetery: Early Cycladic II-III, Keros-Syros (2800-2300 BC) and Phylakopi I culture (2300-2000 BC). Perhaps also Middle Bronze Age: Phylakopi II culture (2000-1700 BC, Minoan influence?).

The Classical Greek city of Arkesine was first established in the 10th-8th century BC by settlers from Naxos. Also colony of Samos (or Miletus) starting in the 7th century BC? Inhabited through the the Hellenistic (Ptolemaic) and Roman periods, but abandoned during the Middle Ages due to the threat from pirates. Site of a Byzantine, and "Venetian" (13th century AD) kastro. Modern name Kastri.

(See Colin Renfrew, The Emergence of Civilization, Oxford 2011, p. 522.)
