I don't understand what's going on in these images. - Omegatron 18:38, 4 Apr 2005 (UTC)

i did consider using cuircuit diagram sybols. However they aren't very clear unless drawn with great care and afaict there is no cuircuit diagram symbol for an intermediate switch. does reading the en:switch article where they are used make them any clearer to you?
Uh... No. 1. There aren't any switches in that diagram. 2. The description includes points A B C D, which are not in the image.
Did you mean something like this?

based off this: http://www.tem.si/slo/info/stik,vtic,podomet/slike-vezava/krz.jpg
though a more compact and symmetric-looking version like theirs would be better.
This type of symbol would be clearer: http://www.handymanwire.com/articles/4waya.gif
with the X and = and one dotted. then we can show a closeup of that intermediate switch and show how it's actually implemented? - Omegatron 20:45, 5 Apr 2005 (UTC)
btw http://www.handymanwire.com/articles/4waya.gif didn't work for my but i found a copy on archive.org
I never said my diagrams were perfect they were just quickly drawn to try and make the point obviously i failed to be clear enough :( your diagrams look much nicer just a few comments
  • you missed one of the two different arrangements used for multiway switching. (you only show the method of feeding into one common and coming out the other common. You can also connect all three terminals of each switch together then go in any out of the two terminals that are not the common.
  • avoid mentioning color codes in diagrams intended for an international audiance they differ between countries.
  • i agree that the way of indicating an intermediate switch on http://web.archive.org/web/20020912124141/http://handymanwire.com/articles/4waya.gif is a sensible method (i don't like drawing it as a DPDT because in practice its nearly always done with a specific intermediate switch).
  • avoid calling the individual switches one way/two way/three way/four way those terms have different meanings in american and british english.
btw if you wan't to make sense of my diagrams consider the purple bits to be the switches .I thought that was kinda obvious since those were drawn out in one corner with fairly typical (at least for here) switch terminal labelings. I guess i was wrong :( Plugwash 10:46, 6 Apr 2005 (UTC)
I'm not saying mine are perfect, either. I really didn't understand yours at all, so I was just making sketches to see if that's what you meant.
Yes, I agree that the = and dotted X is a good way to show the intermediate switch. Let's figure out the best way to show it and then someone who actually knows how to draw nice diagrams can do it.  :-) I am going to try to learn Inkscape now... - Omegatron 14:13, 6 Apr 2005 (UTC)
