What to do with better versions of this image?

[edit]

At my suggestion, a talented newbie, and one of my students at v:Wright State University Lake Campus created and uploaded three versions of File:Free body.svg. I am convinced that all are superior to the original because the original seemed to indicate that five forces were acting, when in fact, there are only three. This file is used on many wikis, so I don't know whether to upload a new version of File:Free body.svg, or replace File:Free body.svg on the English Wikipedia. This file is used in many, many places, on many wikis.

My inclination is to "upload a new version" into the original file, which would change a lot of wikis. And I prefer 1.3, since the white background renders better when pasting into a Word file. What should I do?--Guy vandegrift (talk) 16:17, 27 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I will leave a message on an English Wikipedia talk page that uses this file, and if nobody objects, one of us will replace file:Free body.svg with file:Free body1.3.svg and delete the three images shown above from Commons--Guy vandegrift (talk) 16:18, 27 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I appreciate your attempt to improve the image, but I believe your changes are insufficient. These are the flaws I see:
  • The normal and tangential components of the gravity force should be removed completely. Merely changing the line style only leaves the novice to wonder why those forces are different from the other three.
  • The inclined plane should be removed, otherwise the block is not a free body.
  • The normal and friction forces should be shown acting on the bottom of the block where they actually act.

See the free body diagram article for an example. -AndrewDressel (talk) 14:42, 3 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

But this is not intended to be a proper free-body diagram. The suggestions you are making might not be appropriate for all articles. But, your reaction plus a comment at w:Inclined_plane has me convinced that we should keep the original file:Free body.svg and add file:Free body1.3.svg as a new and separate image. The original file:Free body.svg appears on too many wiki articles to change all of them in any significant way, IMHO. I am not sure how to propose deletions on Commons, but I will attempt to place "suggested delete" templates on file:Free body1.1.svg and file:Free body1.2.svg. I assure that the author won't mind. --Guy vandegrift (talk) 17:00, 5 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
