Deutsch: Grafik zur Paläobiodiversität mariner Organismen im Phanerozoikum und jüngsten Neoproterozoikum auf Familien-Level. Die etwas dickere schwarze Kurve über der rosafarbenen Fläche repräsentiert die gesamte Diversität einschließlich fossil schlecht überlieferungsfähiger Invertebraten ohne oder mit geringem Anteil an mineralische(n) Hartteile(n). Diese basiert auf Schätzungen durch Interpolation zwischen der rezenten Diversität (1900 Familien, deren Vertreter zum überwiegenden Teil keine Hartteilskelette besitzen, siehe gestrichelte Linie rechts) und der Diversität gut fossil erhaltener Weichgewebsfaunen, die punktuell im Fossilbericht auftreten (z.B. im kambrischen Burgess Shale oder im devonischen Hunsrückschiefer). Die übrigen Kurven zeigen die Diversität fossil gut erhaltungsfähiger Organismen mit hohem Anteil an mineralischen Hartteilen. Dabei werden die eher „primitive“ kambrische Fauna (grau), mit u.a. Trilobiten und Archaeocyathiden, die „fortschrittlichere“ paläozoische Fauna (blau), mit u.a. artikulaten Brachiopoden, Seelilien und Seesternen, und die moderne Fauna (gelb), mit u.a. Wirbeltieren und Seeigeln, unterschieden. Die Pfeile zeigen die fünf großen Aussterbeereignisse des Phanerozoikums („Big Five“). Nach Sepkoski (1984).[1]
