Summary

[edit]
Description Lot-9432-4: Ships Will Strike First. The speed with which America is arming her merchant ships is assurance that she not only will continue to get war materials through to the Allies, but that supplies will flow in increasingly large quantities. U.S. cargo ships are being armed with machine-gun turrets to fight off aircraft and with four and five-inch guns which will enable them to hit first when U-boats are sighted. This series of pictures, made at an Atlantic Coast U.S. port, shows how the arming program is being pushed at top speed. Shown: The ships pull up to the wharfs to receive their fighting equipment in this busy scene. Once pliers of peaceful commerce, today, they are carrying products of the “Arsenal of Democracy” to the four corners of the world. Office of War Information Photograph, 9-15 April 1942. Original photograph is small. (2015/12/18).
