Transcription:

[New York] [February] 17, 1918. Dear Gene- Well, I am on the job. I thought the best place to start something was [New York] and I think I have started a number of things. There is positively no reason why the dozens of comrades should either languish in prison or carry the burden of their indictment without something being done about it. Poor old Fred Kraft. His case is rawer than Kates - Dr.Baer of [Philadelphia] - rotten travesty of “justice” Last night I was at a meeting of 120 and they pledged a dollar each when called on -- signed cards to that effect- and I am safe in saying that I single handed and alone can raise a sufficient publicity fund for these comrades. I have got an intimation that I will get in serious trouble with 803 W madison st if I make any effort on behalf of any of the comrades. I can hardly believe this -- what do you think of it. As ever FPO address 14 Erving Place [New York] city
