Description of the Death of Jeroni Desclergues at Ostend in 1604

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: (left) Front page of a book, “Le Memorable Siege d’Ostende”, by Christophle de Bonours, about the Siege of Ostend, published in Brussels in 1628. Jeroni Desclergue's (DC05) death at Ostend in 1604 is described in this book on page 585, as follows

English translation: "Camp master Antuñes having advanced far towards the new fortification of the Besieged, having dug a mine, which he opened by fire, at the beginning of September. It played so aptly that an English enemy Lieutenant named Benethon, a Sergeant, and about forty Soldiers will remain suffocated there. Having seen the opening, a Spaniard named Don Ieronimo de Cleriges advanced promptly with his company to fortify the breach, following the order of Maistre de camp. However, it was too early, so the Besieged, by a subsequent detonation, were buried alive there, Captain, Ensign, Sergeant, and Soldiers."
