Description

"Columbia Awake at Last". US Civil War cartoon.

Columbia (symbol of the United States) throat-punches a man (caricature of Jefferson Davis?) with text on pants "TREASON" "SECESSION" and a Confederate flag on his hat. Davis is stopped short by Columbia's blow; his tongue extends out from his mouth, his eyes bulge, and he drops a knife, a gun labeled [Fort] "SUMPTER", and a corner of the US Constitution he apparently tried to tear from Columbia's hand. In the background 2 other Confederates are startled and move back. A face of a founding father (George Washington, or possibly Thomas Jefferson?) watches over Columbia's head.
