Civil rights demonstration at Fort Lauderdale's segregated public beach, 1961

Summary[edit]

Description
English: African Americans staged a "wade in". On three other occasions in July such protests took place. This particular protest, the largest, was one event in a series of demonstrations, led by Dr. Von Mizell and Broward NAACP President Eula Johnson, which began on July 4, 1961. Demonstrations and lawsuits continued for over one year until a court order struck down Fort Lauderdale's segregated beaches ordinance.
