Description |
English: A grassy prairie rises to a low hill, partially covered with pines. Big Hole National Battlefield Site. A view of Battle Mountain and the siege area from the Nez Perce Camp, looking west. Following the initial ambush, the Nez Perce warriors regrouped and returned the attack. They were able to force the soldiers across the river and into a small wooded point, where they were held at siege until the next day. Although the Nez Perce suffered great losses, it is generally considered to be a tactical victory because they held the soldiers at siege long enough to bury their dead, gather camp, and escape with a majority of their horses.
