Description
English: Hungary was besieged by the Turkish Empire between 1526 and 1686. The battle which most of the time took place on Hugarian soil, was followed all over Western Europe. Many detailed maps on which all the movements of the army and the developments of the battle could be followed were published. Newspaper articles were illustrated by maps and news prints to provide readers with information about the battle sites. Some illustrations were pure fantasy, some based on much older German and Austrian examples. That is the case with this print by Romeyn de Hooghe (1645-1708) where the siege of Belgrade is performed by Austrian troops in 1688. Onlookers get a panoramic view on the battle from a hill.
