&c, glueing of canvafs, along the edges, and acrofsthe grain of the pannels, which glueing verymuch preferves and ftrengthens them. Theblocking is alfo a material afPiftance to theftrength, \^hich is done by a half-fquare, cutacrofs, or angle-ways, cutting it alfo in fliortlengths, and glueing the fquare fides againfl thepannel and its framing. The battens are long, thin pieces of board,placed acrofs the grain of the wood, bradded, orfecured by blocks, or canvafs, in order toftrengthen or fupport thofe parts to which theyare applied. The infide work, after being thus finifiied,lliould be immediately painted all over, exceptthe feats, and in particular the door and frontpannels, before the lining-boards are fixed in,fo as to expofe no timber to the air uncoveredwith paint, as the air materially afFefts it, parti-cularly the wide boards, or pannels, as they fwellin wet, and flirink in dry, feafons : a proper at-tention, in this particular, is indifpcnfably ncccf-fary. THE accommodation in this body makes itmore convenient for large families, being, forthe moft part, capable of holding fix perfons oc-cahonally ; but as the fize of the body affefts theweight of the whole machine, the proprietor hasonly to proportion it to the number he wifhesit to contain; the difference of this from thechariot is only in the length, by the addition ofa feat fide; and as every part of the framingbears the fame name in both, it is unnecelfary torepeat it, but only to obferve, that the coach hasno fore pillar as the chariot has.
