Description 80-G-35669: Appendectomy performed onboard USS Silversides (SS-263) while the ship was engaged in war patrol in enemy controlled waters, December 22, 1942. Shown: PM1 Thomas A. Moore is shown performing an appendectomy on fellow crew member FM2 George M. Platter, left to right in the wardroom where the operation was performed are: Moore; Robert Danko; R. Detmers; and Richard Stegall. Moore is cutting the appendix away from the colon. Official U.S. Navy Photograph, now in the collections of the National Archives. (2017/06/13).
